As part of Liberation Literature week, Poets Jane Holland and Jo Skelt will be reading from their works and discussing the women who have inspired them on Friday 8th June at 6.45pm in the Common Room. Biyi Bandele, one of the Independent’s ‘50 greatest cultural figures shaping a continent’, releases his latest novel, Burma Boy, on the 7th of June. Massive Change in the Guild
The below Resources Committee report which includes the proposals about the future governance of the Guild is going to be presented to Thursday's Guild Council. If passed this report will go to University Council and change the way that the Guild of Students is run. Come to Guild Council in the council chambers at 6pm on Thursday 22.03.07 to engage in the debate about this paper. Vagina Monologues hits the Guild
The Women's Association is putting on a performance of the Vagina Monologues over 2 nights, Thurs 8th and Fri 9th of March starting at 8pm in the Common Room. The tickets cost £5 (all proceeds going to charity) and will be on sale on the door or from a member of the Women's Association in Joes 12-4 on Tues 6th and Wed 7th. People should be advised that the show will contain Adult language and scenes of an explicit nature, but will also be hugely entertaining.

Niteline Awareness Day
In front of the Main Library you will be able to find our Niteline Natter Mattress, where you can take the weight off your feet and relax with our volunteers who will be on hand to provide light refreshments and a friendly ear. Niteliners will also be around campus fliering and surveying students. As a fitting climax to the day, there will be a grand balloon launch at 4pm outside the library. This 'send-a-wish' event allows you to write a personal note to be attached to one of the 1000 blue balloons that will be released. more

Lee Ryan Rocks the Vote for Exec Elections Party
In a change of date, Boyband dreamboat Lee Ryan will now be performing at the Guild on Feb 28th. As it coincides with the first day of voting in the Exec Elections, the theme will be ‘Rock the Vote’, featuring the Guild’s first ever night time polling station. Fab ‘n’ Fresh Gets Behind Marrow – Sat 17th Feb
Fab ‘n’ Fresh on Saturday 17th February is going to be a big one, and it’s all about getting as many people as possible to join the bone marrow register. 24,000 people are diagnosed with Leukaemia every year in the U.K. and the bigger the bone marrow register, the better chance they have of survival. Holocaust Memorial Day at the Guild – ‘Dignity of Difference’
A recent poll shows that 41% of Britons believe a Holocaust could happen in the UK. The Guild believes we can take active steps against allowing such atrocities to ever happen again by openly commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day. Our Commemoration Ceremony this year, held in the Common Room at 5pm on Thursday 25th Jan, features speeches and Q&A from survivors of the Holocaust and the Darfur crisis. Saturday 4th November sees University Sport Birmingham host another explosive Big Event when the University Sport Birmingham American Football team – The Lions, take on Tarannau Aberystwyth. NUS Referendum
In the NUS Referendum held on the 16th -17th October students voted by a majority of 89% to stay in the National Union of Students. Birmingham University students once again affirmed their allegiance to the biggest democratic organisation in Europe that campaigns for the interest of students on a national scale. NUS national demo against raised top up fees – Admission: Impossible
2006/07 is the year of the top up fee. Students starting University this year will have to pay up to £3,000 per year for their education. The National Union of Students (NUS) have organised a demonstration in Trafalgar Square on 29th October and we will be taking hundreds of students to London and demanding that the government take the threat of keeping people out of education by raising fees seriously. Freshers Ball 06 Lineup Confirmed
Radio 1’s Colin Murray will make a sensational return to the Guild for the Freshers Ball 2006 on September 29th, sharing headline status with Eurovision and Popstars; the rivals songstrel Javine (who’s new single was record of the week on Radio 1 recently.) As if that wasn’t enough, Radio 1’s DJ Spoony will bring an urban flavour to the Underground, while S Club 7’s Bradley Macintosh and Another Level’s Dane Bowers take a break from new MTV show ‘Totally Boyband’ to complete the Lineup. Birmingham Student Winners in National Student Employee Competition
This week, Dan Kirby was awarded ‘Birmingham Student Employee of the Year’ as part of a national competition. He works in the Vibe store at the Guild and was nominated by his manager. Richard Angell presented the award on Tuesday. Dan said 'Winning this award was a massive honour, and made me feel very appreciated as a member of BUGS student staff.' Liz McNally, who is a senior assistant in the Job Zone, won runner up in the National NASES Student Employee of the Year 2006. The judging panel included the Director of the National Council for Work Experience and as a result Liz has been invited to Cardiff to receive her award.

The Stamp Out Homophobia in Schools Campaign is being run by University of Birmingham students who are traveling to Prides across the country with a very unusual petition. The Guild has decided to fully support Footaid by postponing this weeks FNF. Footaid is a 24 hours football game being held on the Astroturf pitches on the Main Edgbaston Campus. From 1st November, the Bournbrook area will be becoming an 'alcohol restricted zone'. This means that if a police officer asks you to stop drinking on the street and you refuse then you can be fined £30 on the spot.

The LGB (Lesbian, Gay & Bisexual Association) always claimed they were the best student group in the Guild - now it's official! Following a presentation at the Unilever student group awards 2002, about the things they get up to, the nice people at Unilever decided they were the best. Not only that but rewarded them with a prize of £200 for LGB funds.
